L’hommage de Mike Wilhelm, ci-devant ex guitariste de Loose Gravel, des Charlatans, des Flamin’ Groovies. Et dont la dévotion à Mickey Baker est aussi teintée de respect. Mike a publié son texte le 29 novembre 2012 sur son profil Facebook et a donné à “Bop-Pills” son aval pour une publication. Thanks Mike !!!! “Mickey, besides being a jazz great, really defined the sound of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rhythm & Blues guitar. Love Is Strange is one of the most important R&R records of all time. Mickey Baker went to play in the Really Big Band yesterday, his age in this life was 87.

I have read quite of few interviews of Mickey over the years and he seemed to have a prejudice against Rock ‘n’ Roll which I always found strange since he did so much to define the licks and tone of R&R guitar. If you’ve ever heard the Savoy lp “Sammy Price & the Rock Band” you have heard a real definition of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rhythm and Blues coming from Sammy Price on piano and Mickey Baker and Al Casey on guitars. Don’t know how Mickey could have been in any way ashamed of this great music. These guys played on many R&B and R&R hits coming out of New York back in the ’50s.

A little interesting background on “Love Is Strange” which I got from Bo Diddley’s autobiography: It seems Bo had written the song and his guitar man had come up with the signature lick as played by Mickey Baker. Bo’s lead guitar player had a crush on Sylvia and played the song for and with her. A few months later the record by Mickey and Sylvia came out with the tune credited to Mickey Baker. Bo never pursued suing to get credit and royalties for that record figuring it was no big deal since he could always write another song, which he did many times over. I don’t think he ever quite equaled that masterpiece however”.

J’ai lu pas mal d’interviews de Mickey au fil des ans et il semblait avoir un préjugé contre le Rock ‘n’ Roll, ce que j’ai toujours trouvé étrange puisqu’il a tant fait pour définir les plans et le timbre de la guitare R & R. Si vous avez déjà écouté le LP “Savoy” de Sammy Price & the Rock Band, vous avez entendu une véritable définition du rock’n’roll et du rythm and blues de Sammy Price au piano avec Mickey Baker et Al Casey aux guitares. Je ne sais pas comment Mickey aurait pu avoir honte de cette musique. Ces mecs ont joué sur tellement de hits R & B et R & R issus de New York dans les années 50.

Un truc intéressant sur Love Is Strange, que j’ai tiré de l’autobiographie de Bo Diddley : il semble que Bo ait écrit la chanson et que son guitariste avait créé le lick de signature interprété par Mickey Baker. Le guitariste principal de Bo avait le béguin pour Sylvia et jouait la chanson pour et avec elle. Quelques mois plus tard, le disque de Mickey et Sylvia est sorti avec la mélodie attribuée à Mickey Baker. Bo n’a jamais attaqué en justice pour obtenir le crédit et des royautés pour ce disque, estimant que ce n’était pas grave, puisqu’il pouvait toujours écrire une autre chanson, ce qu’il a fait plusieurs fois. Toutefois, je ne pense cependant pas qu’il ait jamais égalé ce chef-d’œuvre. ”
